Hello people located on the other side of the ocean.
I am currently sitting in what is called a PC bong writing this post. This is definitely on the top of my list for strangest internet cafes. It's on the second floor of my appt building and the guy who works here brings around this sweet peach tea every few minutes -- for free! There are also all of these random people playing those video games where you all talk to each other and try to fight off the bad guys. It's kind of weird, but also pretty intriguing. I sort of feel like I entered into this warzone.
This has been the craziest week of changes. I finally arrived in Busan Tuesday night (Tuesday morning for all of you). I was really really exhausted. I am pretty sure on my 1 hour flight from Seoul to Busan I was nodding off the entire time and the guy next to me was giggling. I was trying so hard to defeat jetlag. I think that I only slept about 3 hours during the entirety of my day of traveling. Which has really paid off! I am going to go ahead and say that I am the victor in the war against jetlag! My first night I was taken to my new school by my recruiter Kelly. Then, my school got me a motel because the girl I am replacing hadn't moved out yet. Anyway, I slept 8 hours that night! The next day I was at school being trained and after I unpacked and moved everything into my appt so I didn't go to bed until midnight. So I slept 8 hours again! Woahh! Then last night I slept at least 7. Pretty awesome aye? It was really just that first day that was rough.
So my job. The Korean kiddos are adorable. The thing about Korean is that most words end in a vowel. So everything they say in English, is almost always pronounced with and "uh" on the end. For example: Hot dog-uh, flame-uh, etc. Then there is the "f" problem. They all replace it with "p". So fish ...is PISH. No matter how many times you correct them, always pish.
I love it though. I felt a little jumbled today because it was my first day teaching by myself. Really the hardest part is not the teaching part...it's the lesson planning and organizing before and after class that's getting me. Anyway, it should be a good learning experience. I think I will really enjoy teaching. I just think kids are so amazing. I love the fact that everything is so new and exciting to them. In Korea, the kids are also brilliant on top of it all. They know so much. I can hardly believe how good some of their English speaking is. Really, and they do so much homework just for this English after-school program. It's incredible. I've got to work on my personal work ethic to be an impressive teacher to them. They are all pretty loving though. I love how they call me "Teacher Nancy". So cute. At the first of class the entire class loves to do paper scissors rock to see who GETS to read first. It's really funny because they all get so into it.
Anyway, I am getting all settled into my apartment. It is little, but it is home :) I will post pictures soon! I am working on getting internet in the room so I can do a lot more when I have that.
As for food. Austin, who has been teaching here for a year (leaves in a couple weeks) has been so helpful. He brought me a bagel from the bakery downstairs this morning and then tonight he took me to this japanese place (yes we sat on the floor). We had this beef soup with mushrooms, greens, potatoes, and delicious beef broth then some sort of fried rice mixture. It was DELISH. He said he would take me to eat the octopus soon. It wiggles as you eat the tenticles! Ahh! I'm scared, but I am not backing out! This is what seeing new places is all about -- surprising yourself.
Love you all.
Post your thoughts.
So happy to read of your journeys! I am excited for you and the adventure you are on. Keep the posts coming and know that the Motls are praying for you!
